5 Steps to Prevent a Cold Before it Starts
by Jacque Butler
On average, you’re likely to get a cold three times a year. Of course, how often you get sick depends on your level of stress, how you eat, the amount of exercise, and how well you sleep. It is possible to prevent a cold, before it tries to bring you all the way down.
Here are five simple steps to take in preventing a cold from becoming full blown.
1. Drink plenty of fluids – As you start to feel the symptoms of a cold, start drinking water, orange juice, or hot herbal tea. Staying hydrated can reduce a sore throat and help reduce congestion, as well as eliminate toxins building up in your body.
2. Gargle – If you have an itchy throat, gargling with a tsp of salt in a glass of warm water may help. Salt reduces inflammation, mucus, and excess water in the throat’s tissues.
3. Rest – The body needs energy to fight off viruses. If you are exhausted and worn down, so is your immune system.
4. Light Exercise – If you have enough energy to do some moderate exercises, like stretching, yoga, or walking, this can help stimulate your immunity. Just don’t overdo, as this can wear your body down even more. Keep your heart rate below 100.
5. Eat Healthy – Choose meals that include lean protein, whole grains, and vegetables to support your immune system. Avoid processed foods, dairy, and sugar, as eating these foods can weaken immunity.
